Geomorphic Assessments
Our project team has considerable experience conducting stream geomorphic assessments, preparing river corridor protection plans, and designing river restoration projects in Vermont. In 2004, Bear Creek Environmental completed five projects utilizing the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) stream geomorphic assessment protocol. In 2005, Bear Creek Environmental conducted both Phase 1 and 2 stream geomorphic assessments of Roaring Brook in Killington, Moon Brook in Rutland, and of the North Branch of the Deerfield River in Wilmington. In addition, Phase 2 stream geomorphic assessments were conducted by Bear Creek Environmental of the Upper Winooski River in Cabot, the West Branch of the Little River in Stowe, and the West Branch Ompompanoosuc River in Strafford. Within the past two years, Bear Creek Environmental has performed Phase 2 Stream Geomorphic Assessments of over 60 river miles in Vermont.
The Bear Creek Environmental project team also has experience and training conducting ANR Bridge and Culvert Assessments. During summer 2004, Mary Nealon attended a Bridge and Culvert Assessment workshop sponsored by the DEC. In addition, Bear Creek Environmental collected data on 40 stream crossings (bridge and culverts) of the Ompompanoosuc River in Strafford, Vermont.
We are currently using Phase 1 and 2 Stream Geomorphic Assessment data as a basis for preparing a river corridor protection plan for the Upper Winooski River within the Town of Cabot and for the West Branch Ompompanoosuc River with the Town of Strafford. We recently completed a partial phase 3 stream geomorphic assessment of a river corridor protection/restoration site on the Upper Winooski River in Cabot Village, and we are in the process of preparing an alternatives analysis for this site.
